Shirodhara is one of Ayurveda's most profound treatments for balancing the nervous system. In Sanskrit, ‘shiro”'means head and ‘dhara”'means flow. This therapy involves a continuous stream of warm herbal oil poured in a steady rhythm across the forehead and the third eye (Ajna Marma). The gentle pressure and soothing warmth of the oil creates a blissful sensation that allows the mind to experience a deep meditative state. The continuous stream lasts for 25-45 minutes, depending upon constitution and doshas to balance, and will be decided upon but the practitioner. The Shirodhara oil can be used up to three times on the same person, thus bringing down the costs of consecutive treatments.
For maintenance or general wellness: relief for periodic stress, general relaxation, or improved concentration, frequency can look like one time a week to once monthly, or one time a season (four times a year).
For therapeutic purposes: it is recommended to repeat Shirodhara daily, for 3-7 days, depending on severity of symptoms. Chronic insomnia, anxiety, or neurological conditions can sometimes extend 4-21 days. In such circumstance I would recommend consulting with an Ayurvedic Doctor with whom we can work together as a team for best treatment plan.
Precautions: Not recommended during pregnancy, menstruation, acute fever or congestion, or for those with head injuries or certain neurological conditions. A brief consultation is required before treatment.
