In Sanskrit, Garshana means “friction by rubbing.” It is an Ayurvedic lymph massage that helps to remove Ama (digestive toxins). The practitioner wears dry, raw silk gloves in order to create friction on the surface of the skin, using long strokes over the limbs toward the heart. This creates static electricity which ionizes and alkalizes the blood (gently detoxing), stimulates circulation and breaks down fat deposits as it creates heat to open the channels. It cleanses and exfoliates the skin rendering it more receptive to absorb therapeutic oils. It improves the tone of the skin, improves digestive capacity, energizes and alleviates sluggishness.
Garshana is best followed by Abhyanga, and then Svedana (herbal steam tent) to further stimulate detoxification of the cells and pores through sweating. One pair of Garshana gloves ($15 value) included to take home.
Precautions: Garshana is not suitable for those who are ill with fever, avoid vigorous massage while menstruating or if have high risk pregnancy, open wounds, active infection, or cancer.
